Firstly, the science bit!

It is not critical to the skin because of its antioxidant properties, it is critical to the skin because of the role it plays in your dermis (so important that the products you choose get down to your dermis!) , where it causes a reaction called hydroxylation. This means essentially that it makes all the amino acids link together. When everything is linking our skin is healthy and makes collagen for us. You cannot make collagen with low vitamin C.

THE MILLEN METHOD

#1 Ingredients

So one of the main vitamin C’s that the skin recognises when it is doing the hydroxylation process is L-ascorbic acid. It is a small molecule so it can penetrate the skin. If you add in other products to stabalize it, the less penetration you will get. Another ingredient to look out for is 3-0-Ethyl Ascorbate, again it has the ability to reach your dermis. Vitamin C’s with these ingredients are often expensive, and in this case you do get what you pay for.

#2 What to consider

I don’t think you need to go higher than 10%, this is wounding territory….you don’t want to be wounding your epidermis to get results, and actually how much of the vitamin c content can actually get through to your dermis….this is quite hard to judge.

Stable and oxidised are the key words to look out for too, they give better penetration to the dermis.

I listened to a podcast recently by the founder and formulator of Osmosis, and my goodness he speaks a lot of sense and fully fits what I have been telling clients for a long time now.

 

“The reason why traumatic procedures as a general rule, work is they cause inflammation. Inflammation causes swelling, swelling causes tightening, and tightening makes you think you just got younger. And so, it’s a very confusing picture because, yes, you come out from an aggressive chemical peel a week later, and you’re like, “Whoa, I’m less pigmented, more even skin tone. My wrinkles look better. Everything is peachy.”
Now, was it a pretty rough week? Probably, if you had a chemical peel, but the end of it what do you see? You see skin that is in recovery. I mean, that’s what literally the scientific research shows is that your wound response is never 100%. It’s certainly not 110% like some people would suggest.

So it’s interesting that it’s still so popular, and I see alot of clients who have been having monthly peels, and their skin has not improved, that is when I can hopefully step in, do a thorough consultation and really get to the route of the issues, and it’s not always pricey products and treatments, but it is a commitment to learn about your health, your lifestyle and why your skin is misbehaving. Dr. Chi, Director of the University of Washington Department of Pathology, performed clinical studies using Bio-Therapeutic’s micro-current device and notes, “The fact that this technology works in harmony with the body is evident. Many of the studies detailing the massive increase in speed regarding wound healing refer to ATP as one of the attributing factors. The other attributing factor is an increase in blood circulation. Blood circulation has everything to do with the function, condition, color and over all health of our skin, as well as underlying tissue. Dr. Chi’s 2003 study performed at the University of Washington further notes a 35% increases in blood circulation in tissue treated with microcurrent.
